I have assorted video pieces, which I'll gradually place here. For now though, here's one of my TV adverts, which I found on YouTube, as well as two video's of me doing comedy sets in Boston. (Be advised, though. The language in the comedy sets, is cheerfully crude and downright vile at times). Give the page time to load, as the content is hosted on YouTube.
Here's one of my TV voice over jobs. (Apologies for the low quality of the visuals - I didn't place the advert on YouTube myself. The content and attitude, has clearly tickled the imagination of net-users, given the number of views it's had). This was part of a large ongoing TV campaign for a hotel chain, in South Africa, and I was the happy voice-over for them.
The Client specifically wanted a 'British' sound, and tone. I obliged :) Most viewers, I think, figured that this was a UK voice-over. Meantime, of course, it was just me, doing a riff on one of my silly Cockney voices, (derived from Neal in 'The Young Ones' for those who know their UK TV).
A couple of the City Lodge ads are in an upcoming BBC TV program in December 2007, called 'Commercial Breakdown'. (My SA agent had to sign releases on my behalf).
This was my first US comedy set. I gradually realized that I had things to say, and decided to see how I felt from using the 'comedy' genre to express myself. First night. First US gig. Terror? Sure - but it was fun. I let off some steam, that had been building up. This was my second set that I put together. It was more focused, and you can perhaps tell that I was trying to deal with the growing angst I was having, over the reality disconnects, and differences between myself as an immigrant - and the average American. It was shortly after this, that I decided to put comedy aside, and focus on the somewhat easier task of writing new plays, and film scripts - a fairly productive decision, as the subsequent results showed.
I'll return to using standup comedy as a creative outlet, at some future point, when I feel the need.
(There are some advantages to being driven more by the creative impulse, than ego - it means I can pick and choose what I feel like creating, without regard to anything other than the primary focus of 'Does this work help me express artistically, what I'm trying to work out internally.')
